The Maths syllabus used to be about concepts, skills in applying rigid standard steps, and computation. The syllabus today is geared towards problem-solving. Students are trained to use mathematical heuristics to tackle unfamiliar problems where the solution is not immediately obvious.
Simply put, mathematical heuristics are logic-based problem-solving techniques. There are 13 mathematical heuristics. Of these, 11 are applicable at primary school level.

Concepts, skills and computation are still necessary for solving routine mathematical problems. Whereas mathematical heuristics techniques are essential for solving problems set against unfamiliar scenarios and involving open-ended analysis.
Singapore’s Ministry of Education organises the 11 primary-level mathematical heuristics into four categories.
Maths Heuristics®’s curriculum was designed in the same way – based on mathematical heuristics techniques (rather than Maths topics). In this manner, our students have heuristics techniques at their fingertips, and can confidently apply them on all challenging problems across all Maths topics.
