Building a Mindset for Success

Think Heuristics™ rests on the timeless adage, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. Today, Singapore’s education system is challenging and competitive, and many parents are seeking the best ways to help their children get ahead. For the founders of Think Heuristics™, they are mentors who believe that teaching a child to fish is key to getting them the grades they need and giving them a mindset for problem-solving they can count on.

Heuristics is a technique for solving simple to complex mathematical problems and science questions posed in school tests and examinations. It is defined in the Cambridge dictionary as “a method of learning or solving problems that allows people to discover things themselves and learn from their own experiences”.

Sunny Tan realised early on that students leafing through guidebooks with bewildering answers is a boat with too many holes to plug. The students needed to set sail with the right wind and anchor themselves with the right concepts and a step-by-step approach.

In a radical move, Sunny established the Maths Heuristics® Programme at the turn of the century which gained good traction as it was tied closely to the MOE Maths Syllabus. Similarly, Linda Koh had developed a breakthrough TCR® Method and set up Heuristics Science to demystify the process of answering open-ended science questions which have baffled many students.  Gene Gan, a former MOE teacher soon baited the idea of integrating Maths Heuristics® with Heuristics Science, and Think Heuristics was launched.

The introduction of Heuristics could not have been better-timed. Education systems were responding to world markets that were shifting towards knowledge-driven economies. Students needed to develop critical thinking and highly-prized crisis management skills. They could no longer regurgitate the prepared model answers they memorised.

Today, Think Heuristics™ is a powerful platform conveying teaching and learning techniques that empower students with the knack to cut through to the core of problems – and embrace skills that will take them through life. The team reaches out to students beyond the classroom with a holistic ecosystem that syncs with the energy of the new generation with online access to videos and live-streaming. And parents are not left out of the net. They are engaged too with workshops and guidebooks that not only share but teach Heuristics techniques that they can pick up to help their child.
